Florida is the national epicenter of the houseplant industry: nearly 70% of the country’s indoor foliage is grown and produced within the state. If you buy a houseplant at any major retail store – including companies like Lowe’s, IKEA, Whole Foods, Costco, Home Depot, Trader Joe’s, or Walmart – it’s likely your plant was grown by workers in Florida. At the bottom of the multi-billion-dollar houseplant industry, thousands of mostly immigrant workers are experiencing a serious labor and human rights crisis.
